Installing On Newer Versions Of MacOS

Gatekeeper gives you more control over what you install.
If your current setting is "Mac App Store", you will get a message saying the download is "damaged". The package is definately not damaged. That's just the message Apple displays when a package doesn't come from their "Mac App Store" and download security settings on Mt Lion and newer OSes are set to defaults.
You can choose to only allow apps that come from the Mac App Store; Or allow apps that come from the Mac App Store and identified developers; Or you can choose to allow any apps to open, just like previous versions of OSX.
Gatekeeper options are found in the Apple menu:
System Preference > Security & Privacy > General tab
under the header "Allow applications downloaded from:"
